Naturopathic medicine is more a way of looking at health and disease, rather than a specific set of treatment modalities. Treatments employed under the heading of Naturopathic Medicine are extensive and varied and may include physical bodywork and manipulation of bones, botanical medicine, healing diets and cleanses, nutritional supplementation and Homeopathy to name only a few.
The underlying foundation of Naturopathic Medicine is the bedrock from which all treatment choices arise. That foundation is an understanding that the body has an innate ability to heal itself and the physician’s job is to find the gentlest, most effective treatment to assist the body in what it already knows how to do. In some cases the best choice is surgery, chemotherapy or pharmaceutical drugs. In other cases a change in diet, better sleep habits and the correct Homeopathic remedy will do the trick.
All methods of treatment exist along a spectrum from invasive and primarily affecting the physical body to gentle and very subtle, affecting all layers from physical to energetic. In Naturopathic Medicine there is no immediate ‘go-to’ treatment for any condition but rather an intention to look closely and accurately at each patient and determine where on that spectrum the most suitable treatment lies.
